Cockroaches

It’s said cockroaches can survive a nuclear bomb! Whether that’s true or not cockroaches are a common and persistent pest problem in both households and commercial establishments. While they are not social insects, they have a tendency to congregate and can survive in a wide range of environments. They have a voracious appetite and will feed on nearly anything of nutritive value, including plants and animals. Beyond being a mere nuisance, they are known to carry and transmit common disease pathogens and can trigger allergic reactions in many individuals. They can make their way into your home in multiple ways such as firewood, bark or items brought into you home

It is important to note that cockroaches are highly adaptable and can withstand many types of pest control treatment. Here in Nelson and Tasman, we typically encounter three species of cockroaches – the German cockroach, American cockroach, and Gisborne cockroach – all of which are capable of producing infestations in a matter of months, for example the female German cockroach, can carry up to 40 eggs at once and produce multiple generations in a single year.

Can I control the problem myself?

DIY control methods usually fall short in terms of effectiveness and longevity. Bug bombs may help for a while but has no long lasting residual effect meaning the cockroaches will move right back in. If you’re dealing with pesky pests in your home or office, there’s no need to worry as there are several ways in which you can tackle the issue. One of the simplest ways to limit these intruders is by reducing or eliminating sources of water and food. You can start by storing your food in sealed and air-tight containers, and cleaning up any spilled pet foods immediately. It’s also crucial to remove grease stains around kitchen stoves and appliances, as they attract pests such as cockroaches and ants. Before they enter your home, inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags, and shipping packages for any signs of infestation. It’s important to address clutter and excess harborage areas by disposing or rearranging old newspapers, magazines, and boxes. By doing so, you’ll prevent them from becoming ideal hiding spots for pests. Keep in mind that these simple steps can go a long way in helping you to control or eliminate pests in your home or office.
