Moss & Lichen
Moss and lichen are common sights on roofs, paths, decks, driveways, fences, and retaining walls throughout the Nelson, Richmond, and Motueka region, thanks to our damp winters and shaded, moisture-prone surfaces. While they might seem harmless, left untreated they hold moisture against roofing materials and timber, which can shorten the life of your roof and create slippery, unsafe paths and decking. Moss also tends to spread quickly once established, working its way under roof tiles and into gaps in paving. We treat a wide range of surfaces — metal, tile, and concrete roofing, concrete and asphalt paths and driveways, timber decks and fences, and stonework.
Can I control the problem myself?
DIY moss and lichen control is possible on smaller, easily accessible areas. Modern treatments don't require pressure washing or scrubbing on most surfaces — the solution is simply applied and left to work, though heavily built-up growth on timber can need more effort. However, roofs still need real care: working at height is genuinely dangerous without the right gear, and chemical treatments need to be matched to the surface (metal roofing, tile, concrete, or timber all respond differently) to avoid staining or damage. Look for a treatment that's free of chlorine bleach, corrosive salts, and phosphates if pets, plants, or family will be nearby.
How we can help
We provide safe, effective moss and lichen treatments across a wide range of surfaces — metal, tile, and concrete roofs, concrete and asphalt paths and driveways, timber decks and fences, and stonework — using biodegradable formulas that are safe around family and pets once applied with the right precautions, and gentle on nearby plants. Results build over time — surfaces are often visibly cleaner within weeks of treatment, and a well-treated surface can stay clear of regrowth for an extended period, especially with a follow-up treatment at the first sign of regrowth. Our approach uses appropriate treatments for your specific surface type, applied without the damage that comes from pressure washing or the wrong chemical mix. We can also talk you through a maintenance plan to keep moss and lichen from building back up, protecting your roof and keeping outdoor surfaces safe underfoot.
